Blessing of Backpacks and Briefcases on Aug. 8-9: Celebrating God's Calling

As a new school year begins, many of us are preparing for fresh routines, new opportunities, and the work God has placed before us. Whether you're heading back to the classroom, returning to the office, working from home, or serving in your community, every vocation is an opportunity to love and serve our neighbors.

On August 8-9, during all worship services, we invite you to participate in our Blessing of Backpacks and Briefcases.

This special blessing isn't just for students. It's for everyone! As you gather for worship—whether in person or at home—bring something that represents your daily calling. It might be a backpack, briefcase, laptop, stethoscope, toolbox, computer keyboard, lesson planner, or any other item you use in your work, studies, or service.

During worship, we will offer a prayer asking God to bless these tools and, more importantly, to bless the people who use them. We will pray that God strengthens us to use our gifts, talents, and daily work to serve both God and our neighbors with wisdom, compassion, and joy.

Martin Luther taught that God works through our everyday vocations to care for the world. Whether we are students, teachers, parents, healthcare workers, tradespeople, office professionals, retirees, or volunteers, our daily work matters to God. This blessing is a reminder that our faith is lived not only within the walls of the church but also in classrooms, workplaces, homes, and communities.

As you prepare for the season ahead, we hope you'll join us for this meaningful tradition. Together, we'll ask for God's guidance, protection, and blessing as we begin another year of learning, working, and serving in Christ's name.
