Outreach Partner Spotlight: Arizona Humane Society

Faithful Care for All of God's Creation at St. John's

Each month, the Arizona Humane Society's Healthy Paws Mobile Clinic pulls into our parking lot, transforming our campus into a hub of healing for pets throughout the Glendale community. Through the faithful work of St. John's Outreach Committee, we've created a welcoming space where neighbors can access affordable veterinary care for their beloved companions.

Laken Prokopec, Healthy Tails Mobile Clinic Manager at the Arizona Humane Society, shares the impact: "I am extremely elated to say that we have vaccinated over 200 pets from the Glendale area since starting to revisit the St. Johns location. We have an amazing turn out at each event and it's a location we look forward to."

Over 200 pets! That's 200 families who didn't have to choose between essential care and other necessities. That's 200 animals protected from preventable diseases. That's 200 stories of God's love made tangible through partnership.

In Genesis 1:31, God surveys all of creation, including every living creature, and declares it "very good." The Psalmist reminds us that "the earth is the Lord's and all that is in it" (Psalm 24:1), calling us to stewardship of every part of God's beloved world. St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day we celebrate each October with our beloved Blessing of the Animals, understood this deeply. He preached to the birds, called all creatures his brothers and sisters, and recognized that caring for animals honors the Creator who made them. When our neighbors face impossible choices between feeding their families and caring for their pets, or when veterinary care seems financially out of reach, we are called to respond with the same compassion Christ showed to all who were vulnerable and overlooked.

This ministry embodies our vision that "God's grace guides St. John's to grow as a Christ-centered, inclusive, and active community." By partnering with community organizations to advocate for justice, equity, and dignity in our local communities, we extend Christ's love to all of God's creation, two-legged and four-legged alike. As St. Francis prayed, "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace." Through this partnership, we become instruments of God's healing care for the whole community.
